Our stay at Hotel Aki Grand included a night cruise around the floating Torii gate (嚴島神社の大鳥居). The assembly point was at the hotel lobby, and we boarded the boat at the pier just outside the hotel. Unfortunately the torii was under renovation. The status of the renovation can be found here.
The Torii (鳥居) is a structure that is found at the entrance of a Shinto Shrine. And this is a simple way to differentiate between a shrine and Buddhist temple. And this Torii gate in Miyajima is probably the most famous of them all.
When we were near the Torii gate, many of the Japanese made their prayers by clapping twice, followed by a bow.
Below was the day view of the torii gate when we took the boat to Miyajima (宮島).
