We left our luggage at the hotel and took the hotel shuttle to the JR station. The ferry terminal was just beside the rail station. Ferry ran about every 15 min. There was a line forming at the berth waiting to board the next ferry.
Miyajima (宮島) literally means the shrine island. The famous shrine on the island is the Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社).
We could actually get a close up shot of the Itsukushima Shrine and the Otorii.
From the ferry terminal, it was about 1km to the Itsukushima Shrine. Along the way, we passed through the Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street where there were many shops and eateries.

Floating Torii Gate Night Cruise 嚴島神社の大鳥居
Our stay at Hotel Aki Grand included a night cruise around the floating Torii gate (嚴島神社の大鳥居). The assembly point was at the hotel lobby, and we boarded the boat at the pier just outside the hotel. Unfortunately the torii was under renovation. The status of the renovation can be found here.
The Torii (鳥居) is a structure that is found at the entrance of a Shinto Shrine. And this is a simple way to differentiate between a shrine and Buddhist temple. And this Torii gate in Miyajima is probably the most famous of them all.
When we were near the Torii gate, many of the Japanese made their prayers by clapping twice, followed by a bow.
Below was the day view of the torii gate when we took the boat to Miyajima (宮島).
