Anago Yamayoshi 炭焼あなごやま義

We had some time to spend in Himeji before heading to our onsen hotel in a nearby town. We went straight looking for food. We wanted to try this Anago Yamayoshi (炭焼あなごやま義). Most of us are familiar with unagi (fresh water eel). Anago is a salt water eel, and is usually known as conger eel.

We reached the restaurant together with another group of patrons, and had to queue behind them. But it was a short wait. The interior was small. So most would quickly finish their food and go.

While queuing, you could see the staff grilling the anago.

The sequence to eat your anago meshi was to start eating the anago as it was, next was with wasabi, and lastly with the soup.

Our anago meshi (あなご三色三昧重) came with anago cooked in 3 ways - grilled, steamed, simmered.
